Heartthrobs Teach Lessons, too

As a teen, I had a crush on singer Carly Simon. (Who didn’t?) And I learned a couple of things: 1. I would never actually meet her…ever…probably. And 2. She taught a great message in her song, Anticipation.

After 36+ years in business, I’ve learned disciplining yourself to anticipate situations can save careers. Taking time to ask — and answer — questions like these before you meet with reporters is worth every minute:

  1. What might they ask?
  2. How would I respond to each question?
  3. How would I answer what, when, how, why, who, where and so what?
  4. Can I practice a mock interview with someone I trust and get honest feedback?
  5. What 3 points do I want to make?
  6. How can I appropriately follow up after the interview?
