What do you do when you’re required to constantly defend your boss’s statements and behavior, especially to media reporters?
Option 1: Grin and bear it.
Why? Because you HAVE to be loyal; otherwise, you shouldn’t cash your paychecks. Moreover, as an executive, you HAVE to be professional; otherwise, you damage your personal brand.
(I feel we see some of this going on with national leaders these days. Who doesn’t? Perhaps the risk-reward ratio allows those who grimace at defending their boss find that the upside for their own careers makes it worth it.)
Option 2: Find another position, job or place to pursue professional dreams.
Simply put, I’ve found that is the reality. Fact is the boss is unlikely to change his/her ways. That’s who they are. That’s in part how they’ve achieved their position. I’ve learned firsthand expecting long-term change from a boss is largely fruitless, frustrating and a waste of time.
Point is to evaluate options for your own career.
