In my 34 years in the business, I’ve learned it’s:
- Hard to work with a narcissist;
- Hard to work with a client who is a narcissist;
- Hard to work with a boss who is a narcissist; and
- There are LOTS of professionals who are not narcissists who you can work with, around and for.
While working in LA, I learned my boss was of the first sort, but after two years of trying to get him to change, I realized he would never. So I quit.
With a wife and three children to support, I quit. With no job offer to step into, I quit.
Scary. Irrational. And the best decision for me in that situation. Exactly 30 days later, I started a better job in a different market and my career flourished. Yours can, too.
Because you teach people how to treat you, because YOU show others what you will tolerate, and because life is short with unexpected turns, I hope you will make your career fabulous, avoiding toxic people and embracing good colleagues.
