Any time I hear a reporter say, “This is a story you’ll only see here (on our station),” I think, “This is okay to hear once but not two or three times.” When that happens, the reporter sounds desperate.
I advise clients to never sound desperate anywhere anytime. Hints of desperation can squirt out in tone, words, body language, beads of sweat and more. Which is why it’s critical to:
- Know what you’re going to say;
- Know what you’re not going to say; and
- Know how to handle hot grounders.
With that, it’s a matter of practice, practice and practice. Out loud is the best. Having an honest, candid human to critique is the icing on the cake.
