Avoid the Look

Want to avoid the deer-in-the-headlights look? First improve your ability to think on your feet — to speak thoughts, ideas, persuasive rebuttals and even rough concepts WHILE you’re in the moment.

This plays out especially when you’re being interviewed by reporters. With a mic, with a camera, with lights.

One tip to help develop this key skill is to play board games, group games or party games where you HAVE to respond. (I KNOW it’s going to feel uncomfortable…at first. But trust me, if you keep at it, I think you’ll find you’ll love it. Why? Because you’re competitive. You’re successful and you like a challenge.)

Another tip is to ANTICIPATE questions you’re going to be asked.

Then develop answers. Then say them out loud. Then say them to someone (you can trust) who will give you honest feedback. Honest feedback often sounds like: I liked this part. I didn’t like that part. (The “didn’t like that part” contains nuggets to help you most.)
